Krakow, Poland

Krakow, the old royal capital of Poland, is globally acclaimed for its many precious architectural monuments and a unique, friendly atmosphere. Krakow is one of the oldest cities in Poland, with evidence showing settlements there since 20,000 BC, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of the highlights include Wawe Castle, the ancient seat of the Polish kings and now a major museum and Kazimierz, the former Jewish district, preserved in memory of more than 40,000 Jewish residents of Krakow and the surrounding areas who died in the Holocaust.

Approximately 50 km west of Krakow are the remains of Auschwitz, the largest and most infamous of Nazi Germany’s concentration camps. Auschwitz was only partially destroyed by the fleeing Nazis, so many of the original buildings remain as a bleak document of the camp's history.
